Chemical Engineering
CHIS, Free University of Brussels
The chromatography research at Chemical Engineering (CHIS) of the Free University of Brussels (VUB) focuses on the development of novel analytical separation devices, columns and methods, as well as on the investigation and the modeling of flow effects in chromatography systems. In the past years, the group has tackled a number of timely and/or long-standing problems in chromatography, and has grown into an internationally reputed fundamental research group in the field of chromatography with over 20 peer reviewed papers/year and on the average 5 PhD students graduating/year over the last 5 years.

Biography
Gert Desmet (spokesperson, PI at CHIS) is Associate Editor of the most prestigious journal in his broader area (Analytical Chemistry, impact factor 5.8, one of the flagship journals of American Chemical Society and figuring in Nature’s top 100 of most influential scientific journals). He was voted in the top 20 of the world’s most influential researchers in analytical sciences by the readers of the Analytical Scientist, and won multiple international awards (including the "Emerging Leader in Chromatographic Science"-award). He holds an ERC Advanced Grant and was appointed in the permanent scientific committee of the two most important and long-standing international conference series in the area of chromatography.

Free University of Brussels
Biography
Sebastiaan Eeltink, conducted his post-doctoral research at UC Berkeley (USA) and subsequently won an Odysseus grant to establish a research group at the VUB. Currently, he is full professor and his team aims at the development of novel column structures and microfluidic chip technology for modulation in 2D-LC and spatial 3D-LC, and advances (2D-)LC-MS workflows to characterize contemporary biopharmaceutical and life-science mixtures. One of his students (Dr. B. Wouters) won the Solvay Award for best PhD Thesis. In 2020 he will chair the International Symposium on Hyphenated Techniques in Chromatography (HTC-16).
